SAN PEDRO SULA, HONDURAS – During the 140th Session of the International Coffee Council (ICC), held in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, it was officially announced that Colombia will host the 2027 International Coffee Council, the world’s most significant event for the global coffee industry.
The announcement was made by Germán Bahamón, CEO of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia (FNC), and Vanúsia Nogueira, Executive Director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO).
The ICC plenary session highlighted Colombia’s selection, recognizing the country’s leadership in sustainability, innovation, and coffee quality—values that have firmly positioned Colombia as a global benchmark in the production of high-quality Arabica coffee.
“It is both an honor and a great responsibility to host this gathering. Being chosen as the venue for the 2027 International Coffee Council reaffirms global confidence in our country and our coffee sector. It will be an opportunity to showcase the progress of our coffee growers and their commitment to a fairer and more competitive future,” said Bahamón.
Addressing representatives from the ICO’s 75 member countries, Bahamón emphasized that Colombia is currently experiencing one of its best production periods in the past three decades. This success, he noted, is the result of collaborative efforts between coffee producers, Cenicafé (the National Coffee Research Center), and the FNC. Together, they have developed new coffee varieties, implemented sustainable practices, and strengthened ties with international markets.
Bahamón also announced that Cenicafé will launch a new Arabica variety in 2027, the result of 30 years of scientific research. This new strain will be adapted to regions located below 1,200 meters above sea level, expanding cultivation areas and creating new opportunities for thousands of coffee-farming families.
On the sidelines of the event, the FNC’s CEO held a bilateral meeting with Honduran President Iris Xiomara Castro Sarmiento, where they discussed key topics such as the development of the coffee sector, resilience to climate change, and the role of coffee as an economic and social driver in Latin America.
The 2027 International Coffee Council will serve as a crucial platform to strengthen international cooperation, promote a more sustainable and inclusive coffee industry, and further solidify Colombia’s position as a global leader in the transformation of the coffee sector.
